German with ChatGPT: C1 Learner’s Journey

2 minutes

As someone who reached a C1 level in German, learning a language has become so much easier with tools like ChatGPT, especially using the latest audio version on my iPhone. Comparing this to my experience three years ago, the difference is remarkable. What once felt like a challenging and tedious process is now accessible and even fun.

With ChatGPT, I can have real-time conversations in German, practicing not only vocabulary but also grammar in ways that suit my learning style. For instance, I often ask ChatGPT to help me train with 100 verbs in their three forms or focus on verbs used with the Dativ or Akkusativ cases. Repetition is key for me, so I repeat this exercise up to 10 times a day, speaking aloud into my phone. Here are a few personal examples of the most useful questions I ask to practice German: “Tell me about the strong declension in German. Give examples and repeat it three times.”

As a mother of two, constantly driving my kids around, it’s invaluable to have such an independent and powerful learning tool in my pocket for free or 20 dollars a month. Whether I’m sipping coffee between errands or waiting at a stoplight, I can practice and improve my skills. It’s a truly hands-on and mobile way to enhance my language abilities without needing to sit down for dedicated study time.

One amusing detail is that while ChatGPT speaks German very well, it does so with a slight English accent. Personally, I find this adorable! It’s still very clear and understandable, making it a non-issue in the learning process. And the benefits extend beyond just learning German—if you’re preparing for an English job interview or simply want to improve your conversation skills, ChatGPT can also guide you through interview questions and scenarios.
